However, while the finished look is thrilling, the process from start to finish isn’t always easy. As someone currently in the middle of a kitchen renovation with my mom, we want to be transparent about what the process looks like for us. Renovations can vary for everyone—they can be overwhelming, drawn out, and challenging. If you’re considering renovating your home, keep reading.
Here’s what we’ve learned so far from helping my mom renovate her kitchen.
Step-by-Step Process
Start by finding a local home improvement store that can assist with your project. Do your research to choose a company you’re comfortable with. Consider their prices, styles, designs, and deals.
We chose Home Depot, and here’s what the process looked like for us:
- Consult with an expert to discuss your vision.
- Schedule an appointment for measurements.
- Analyze the custom design with an expert and communicate your likes and dislikes.
- Select your new pieces (for us, it was cabinets and countertops).
- Schedule an installation appointment.
Here’s What We Learned
We haven’t reached the end of this project, but here are a few things we’ve learned along the way:
1. Be Picky
Now is the time to be picky—don’t rush the process. Get exactly what you want, especially if you’re investing significant money. My mom and I took multiple trips to Lowe’s and Home Depot to explore all our options for cabinets, knobs, handles, and countertops. If something doesn’t match your design style, don’t hesitate to exchange it for something different.
2. Expect Delays and Changes
While it’s important to maintain a positive mindset, be prepared for unexpected delays. We were told that installing the cabinets would take four days, but things didn’t go as planned. The crew initially took the wrong measurements, leading to delays. What was supposed to be a four-day project turned into weeks of waiting for the correct cabinets to arrive. The takeaway: be prepared for setbacks.
3. Measurement is Key
As you can see, incorrect measurements can derail the entire process and push back your expected finish time. Make sure all measurements are accurate. Don’t hesitate to ask for re-measurements to avoid any mishaps. This will ensure that all cabinets are precisely cut and customized to fit your kitchen.
4. Have a Vision Beforehand
While it’s okay if you don’t know exactly what you want, having a vision beforehand can be incredibly helpful. Knowing how you’d like your new cabinets to be designed based on your kitchen size or cabinet types will save time and make decision-making easier. My mom and I didn’t have a clear vision going into this, but we realized that having one would have streamlined the process.
5. Don’t Be Afraid to Speak Up
Reviewing the 3D design the company doing the renovation has created can be overwhelming. You might see features or changes you didn’t ask for, which could increase the cost. Don’t be afraid to speak up. Stand firm in your decisions and communicate your likes and dislikes. For example, when our designer, Mary, presented us with a 3D model of the cabinets, my mom noticed several unnecessary drawers and cabinets. She communicated her preferences, lowering the cost and giving her confidence in the result.
